Project Portfolio

UIC is experienced at working in remote arctic conditions and sensitive to the unique design challenges it presents.  UIC delivers a single-source portfolio of services to support their clients in all phases of their project life cycle.  The projects below are just a sample of the services the UIC family of companies has provided to their clients in the Arctic.

  • Alpine Development Capital Projects

UMIAQ has provided support services to ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. on the Alpine Project since 1996

UMIAQ (formerly LCMF) established an affiliation with the Kuukpik Corporation in 1996. The Kuukpik UMIAQ Team has provided surveying services to ConocoPhillips for more than 10 years in support of projects and operations within the Alpine Development area. They provide ConocoPhillips with the technical resources needed to perform helicopter reconnaissance surveys, establish ice-road alignments and support construction of river crossings, drilling and facility work pads, and airstrips and many other support services.  In addition to the field work required the Kuukpik/UMIAQ team provides the necessary field office computations, mapping, database development and preparation of documents for design, construction, documentation, regulatory requirements, and operational uses.

  • CH2MHILL Polar Services (CPS) Barrow Science and Logistics Support

UMIAQ has been providing science and logistics support in Barrow, AK to the National Science Foundation (prime subcontractor to CH2MHILL Construction Inc.) since 2009.

UMIAQ maintains all vehicles and field equipment in safe running condition for use by researchers and staff.  They also ensure that lodging accommodations are fully supplied, maintained, and up to par.  UMIAQ recruits experienced bear guards and ice guides with local knowledge to support projects as needed. UMIAQ provides an orientation to researchers so that they are adequately prepared to work in the harsh arctic environment.  Part of this orientation includes community information and HSET training including emergency action and site safety plans, a Barrow orientation, wildlife avoidance, cold weather awareness and firearms awareness.  UMIAQ develops and manages a working allocation system for all resources; especially those that are critical to safety and accomplishing work efficiently.

  • Barrow Replacement Hospital Marine Transport

Bowhead Transport Company provides competitive pricing and turnkey solutions for the delivery of construction materials from Seattle to the Barrow Replacement Hospital site.

The $3.8 million project includes multiple year shipments of building materials from Seattle to the Barrow construction site.  The Bowhead Transport receiving staff manages to haul the materials via barges and landing craft vessels. The construction of the Barrow replacement hospital began in 2008 and has since, continued to operate on schedule, within budget, and with zero lost time accidents.

  • Wainwright Cleanup

Bowhead Transport Company has provided support services to ELM Solutions Corporations on the Wainwright Cleanup project since 2010.

Bowhead Transport Company has proven to maintain qualified marine logistics for multiple cargo vessels.  Bowhead Transport transferred super sacks filled with dirt on platforms from the Wainwright spit to landing crafts for ELM Solutions Corp.  The cargo is then towed to Seattle and discharged. Bowhead Transport's USCG licensed vessels are fully equipped with ocean tug and barge capabilities, shallow draft landing crafts, and a full set of cargo handling equipment.  They are highly experienced in multiple vessel coordination to complete cargo transfers and barge loading within the limited window of the Arctic marine open water season.  Bowhead Transport has a Seattle area USCG & TSA approved terminal providing suitable equipment (such as ramps, forklifts and sweeper) for clean and efficient cargo discharge direct to intermodal vehicles for beyond movement to customer specified and contracted transfer facility.

  • Barrow Gas Fields

UMIAQ professionally and successfully served the North Slope Borough with a number of services over the course of their contract period from 2010 to 2011.

UMIAQ provided a variety of services to the North Slope Borough including project procurement, fuel delivery services to the job sites and equipment, engineering and logistics for waste management, and development of fuel supply and Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans.  In addition, general survey and GIS support and medical and security support with teaming partner Beacon Occupational Health and Safety was also provided along with oil spill response technician support and other services as needed. UMIAQ also provided Design and Construction Administration for a combined shop/office building at the NSB Barrow South Field.  This project was part of a larger multi-year/multi-phased plan to modernize the existing natural gas extraction, transportation, conditioning and distribution systems for the community.

  • Weather Service Office and Upper Air Inflation Shelter Facility

In 2008, SIKU Construction successfully managed the construction of the weather service office and upper inflation shelter facility in Barrow, AK.

SIKU Construction was contracted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and NOAA to design and construct a new 3,000 square foot facility comprised of an office, conference room, kitchen, instrument maintenance, garage, standby power generation, and balloon launch structure to serve NOAA in its weather forecasting functions. This facility’s function is to inflate, launch, and track weather balloons twice per day at 12-hour intervals, 365 days per year and was designed for continual operation in extreme Arctic conditions with temperatures ranging from -45° to +70°.  With limited time for construction due to the compacted building season on the North Slope, SIKU Construction was able to meet the customer’s specification while providing consideration for endangered species and minimizing the impact to the environment.

  • Noatak School

In 2007, UIC Construction served as design-assist contracted to provide construction services for a new 52,000 square foot K-12 school in Noatak, AK.

Within a short period of 19 months, they completed the design, procurement, and construction of the entire school. The project included extension of underground sewer and water, above ground fuel pipe lines, gravel site pad and roads, drill and slurry of steel pipe piles, structural steel framing, winterization, all mechanical, electrical, and fire suppression system.

  • Barrow Global Climate Facility

UIC Construction was responsible for the construction of the research/educational global climate facility in Barrow, AK.

Having to accommodate the arctic climate, the facility was constructed using structural steel and concrete piling foundation and footing systems.  All buildings are equipped with an automatic fire suppression system and utilize a supply building and lift stations for water and sewer. The project was successfully executed on time and within budget.

  • Barrow Replacement Hospital Construction

UIC Construction, with their partner SKW/Eskimos Inc., is constructing the Barrow Replacement Hospital which is a 100,000 square-foot, two story critical access hospital in Barrow, AK.
